Victoria Day

History of Victoria Day, (May 19th. 2025)

The Sovereign’s birthday has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).  May 24, Queen Victoria’s birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845.

After Confederation, Queen Victoria’s birthday was celebrated every year on May 24 unless that date was a Sunday, in which case a proclamation was issued providing for the celebration on May 25. After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, an act was passed by the Parliament of Canada establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day.

The British Isles Sarnie Week, (May 18th. till May 24th. 2025)

British Sandwich Week started in 1990, thanks to the efforts of the British Sandwich & Food to Go Association. This organization, formed to represent businesses involved in the “food on the move” sector, aimed to highlight the sandwich’s importance in British culture.

British Sandwich Week is celebrated across the U.K. to honor their most exquisite culinary invention — the sandwich! Yes, the sandwich originated in Britain, and today it is one of the most common household dishes in the world. This is because a sandwich is healthy, affordable, and has countless recipes that are super easy to create. In fact, there are so many kids around the globe for whom peanut butter sandwiches and egg sandwiches have become a consistent part of their diet. Since the food item is so essential in today’s time, celebrating its invention every year is a must! The sandwich / sarnie / butty / bap or blaa is part of our history, culture and traditions.

Make yourself a Victorian Era sandwich, pour yourself a pint and have a fabulous Victoria Day weekend.
