Sons of Scotland host Climbers

March 9 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

You are invited to a special treat at our next meeting. Please mark down Monday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Halina Centre as an event that you will wish to attend. Our invited guest presenters will be Mhairi and David Todd. They are retired citizens of Vernon who have world-wide reputations as alpinists, adventurers and global travellers.

Mhairi grew up in a small community near Inverness in the Highlands of north-east Scotland. David was born and grew up in Glasgow. He started his climbing career on the facade of the tenement building in which he lived. For your information, mountains in Scotland reach a maximum of 1000 metres (3000 feet) and are called “munros” (honest) or “bens”. There are 54 of these in Scotland and Mhairi and David spent their early climbing days on those mountains. Before long, they “graduated” to loftier, even more dangerous and challenging mountains in Europe and further afield.

Both have travelled worldwide and have climbed in every continent. Their stories are spellbinding. In his “early” days of adventuring, David spent two and half years in Antarctica. He may tell the story of his dogsled team there. They will be speaking about their lives, their travels and their scary encounters with crevasses, sheer cliff faces, summiting lofty peaks and leaping across crags and fissures. Their pictures, curated for this evening, will thrill and chill us.

So, as this event is a rare happening, we are throwing our doors open to your family members, your friends, your neighbours. Please send this note along to encourage them to attend. There will be no fee charged on this particular evening but the quality of the presentation could draw a full house at any hall.
