DESCRIPTION:Scottish Country Dance Workshop\nSaturday\, April 26th\, 2025\nPaddlewheel Park Hall. Vernon BC\nInstructor: Kay Sutherland\nKay began dancing in elementary school in Scotland as part of the Phys Ed program. After a gap when she first came to Canada\, Kay resumed dancing when Dorothy Hargreaves started a class in Deep Cove in 1986 and began teaching at the class in 2007. Currently\, Kay teaches the North Shore ‘Dance Scottish’ class. She has been the director of the Vancouver Branch Demonstration Team (Strictly Scottish) since 2016. Kay is a CTI trainer and RSCDS tutor responsible for training new teachers … and she loves Scottish Country Dance and music. \nMusician: Mary Ross\, Accordionist \nMary has been involved with music and dancing since the age of five\, starting with Highland dancing for twenty years in Calgary and then moving on to Scottish Country Dancing in Victoria. Mary has enjoyed playing for Scottish Country Dances\, Ceilidhs and workshops since 1991. During that time she has played for TAC Summer School at Shawnigan Lake\, Vancouver Island\, and Vancouver BC\, Youth Weekends\, SCD workshops\, dances and ceilidhs in Western Canada and USA. DESCRIPTION:Canada remembers the Battle of Vimy Ridge\, fought over four days beginning April 9\, 1917\, which many believe marked Canada’s coming of age as a nation. Of the 100\,000 Canadians who fought in this First World War battle\, more than 7\,000 were wounded and nearly 3\,600 lost their lives. Canadian bravery in the face of difficult circumstance was the hallmark of the Battle of Vimy Ridge\, and has become the standard by which our Canadian Armed Forces operate today. \nWhile we can never fully appreciate what our soldiers experienced at the Battle of Vimy Ridge\, 99 years ago\, we will remember and honour them. We are forever indebted to those who served and those who sacrificed their lives in defence of our country. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice to help ensure the peace and freedom for which Canada is recognized around the world. \nEvery year\, on this day\, communities across Canada pay tribute to the soldiers who fought at Vimy Ridge. The courage of our Canadian heroes will never be forgotten.

SUMMARY:Tartan Day
DESCRIPTION:Tartan Day is a celebration of Scottish heritage on April 6\, the date on which the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. An ad hoc event was held in New York City in 1982\, but the current format originated in Canada in the mid-1980s. It spread to other communities of the Scottish diaspora in the 1990s. \nCanada estimates 15.1% or 4.7 million Canadians claim Scottish descent.[3] As stated above\, Tartan Day in Canada originated with a proposal from the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia and has since been proclaimed by all the provincial legislatures. In 2007 Peter Stoffer introduced a Private member’s bill for “An Act respecting a Tartan Day”. Progress of the bill was interrupted by the 2008 election\, but it has been resubmitted.[4] \nAn annual ‘Gathering of the Clans’ will take place each April 6 or on the Sunday nearest to it on Parliament Hill in Ottawa at noon with pipes\, drums\, and dancing hosted by the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band\, Canada’s oldest civilian pipe band.[5] The 2011 celebrations marked the first time that Tartan Day has been celebrated with Canada’s official tartan having been named: the Maple Leaf.
