SUMMARY:Vimy Ridge Day
DESCRIPTION:Canada remembers the Battle of Vimy Ridge\, fought over four days beginning April 9\, 1917\, which many believe marked Canada’s coming of age as a nation. Of the 100\,000 Canadians who fought in this First World War battle\, more than 7\,000 were wounded and nearly 3\,600 lost their lives. Canadian bravery in the face of difficult circumstance was the hallmark of the Battle of Vimy Ridge\, and has become the standard by which our Canadian Armed Forces operate today. \nWhile we can never fully appreciate what our soldiers experienced at the Battle of Vimy Ridge\, 99 years ago\, we will remember and honour them. We are forever indebted to those who served and those who sacrificed their lives in defence of our country. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice to help ensure the peace and freedom for which Canada is recognized around the world. \nEvery year\, on this day\, communities across Canada pay tribute to the soldiers who fought at Vimy Ridge. The courage of our Canadian heroes will never be forgotten.

SUMMARY:Sons of Scotland host Climbers
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a special treat at our next meeting. Please mark down Monday\, March 9\, at 7:30 p.m. at the Halina Centre as an event that you will wish to attend. Our invited guest presenters will be Mhairi and David Todd. They are retired citizens of Vernon who have world-wide reputations as alpinists\, adventurers and global travellers. \nMhairi grew up in a small community near Inverness in the Highlands of north-east Scotland. David was born and grew up in Glasgow. He started his climbing career on the facade of the tenement building in which he lived. For your information\, mountains in Scotland reach a maximum of 1000 metres (3000 feet) and are called “munros” (honest) or “bens”. There are 54 of these in Scotland and Mhairi and David spent their early climbing days on those mountains. Before long\, they “graduated” to loftier\, even more dangerous and challenging mountains in Europe and further afield. \nBoth have travelled worldwide and have climbed in every continent. Their stories are spellbinding. In his “early” days of adventuring\, David spent two and half years in Antarctica. He may tell the story of his dogsled team there. They will be speaking about their lives\, their travels and their scary encounters with crevasses\, sheer cliff faces\, summiting lofty peaks and leaping across crags and fissures. Their pictures\, curated for this evening\, will thrill and chill us. \nSo\, as this event is a rare happening\, we are throwing our doors open to your family members\, your friends\, your neighbours. Please send this note along to encourage them to attend. There will be no fee charged on this particular evening but the quality of the presentation could draw a full house at any hall.

The colony joined Canada as the country’s sixth province “British Columbia”.\nDuring July “Brit History Month” we will be celebrating and giving recognition to the extensive contribution that those that came from the countries of the British Isles: England\, Scotland\, Wales\, North Ireland\, Isle of Man\, Cornwall and the Republic of Ireland had made to the Heritage\, History\, Traditions and Customs of those that live in British Columbia.\nWith the arrival of those from Great Britain came a series of trading posts\, and two consecutive gold rushes in the mid-1800s which brought an influx\nof prospectors\, merchants\, fur traders\, farmers and pioneers from around the world. The 1900’s marked another period of rapid growth\, with massive\nbuilding projects including dams\, bridges\, railways\, ferries\, and the completion of the Trans Canada Highway. Many of those projects were the result of those that came from England\, Ireland\, and Scotland.\nOn July 1\, 1867: The British North America Act (today known as the Constitution Act\, 1867) created Canada. June 20\, 1868: Governor General Lord Monck signs a proclamation that requests all Her Majesty’s subjects across Canada to celebrate July 1.\nThe central region was given the name of “New Caledonia” by explorer Simon Fraser. To avoid confusion with Colombia in South America and the island of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean\, Queen Victoria named the area British Columbia when it became a colony in 1858.\nThe province’s name was chosen by Queen Victoria\, when the Colony of British Columbia (1858–1866)\, i.e.\, “the Mainland”\, became a British colony in 1858.\nThen on July 20th. 1871. The colony joined Canada as the country’s sixth province “British Columbia”. The new immigrants that came from Great Britain\, North Ireland and the Republic of Ireland left their homeland in the hopes of a new future. They brought with them many of their customs and traditions that are still in use by the citizens of British Columbia.\nWe continue to remember their contributions when we celebrate Commonwealth Day\, Victory Day\, Burn’s Night\, St. David’s Day\, St. George’s Day\, St. Andrew’s Day\, St. Patrick’s Day\, St.\nPiran’s Day\, Tynwald Day\, Christmas Day\, Boxing Day and Queen Elizabeth II birthdays.\nIf you were born in the U.K.\, have ancestors in the U.K. or had a holiday in the U.K. you are invited to join with us in a celebration of “Brit History Month”
